Denise N. Baken, Ph.D.

Dr. Baken is President of Shield Analysis Technology, LLC. Prior to establishing Shield, she was Director, Biodefense Programs for the Center for Innovative Technology Before joining CIT Dr. Baken retired from the Army as a Colonel after 28 years and a career that included the position of Chief of Staff for the Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense for Chemical and Biological Protection.

Dr. Baken has evaluated technological and scientific trends in pathogen detection and identified changes in known chemical and biological threats. She also identified technologies that leverage low-cost unmanned systems into remotely-operated capabilities that multiply human effectiveness and minimize personnel danger in hostile or inaccessible environments.

Dr. Baken’s research has investigated al Qaeda’s business method approach to the threat industry and potential vulnerabilities posed by the biotechnology industry’s open source competitive intelligence information.

Co-author of Al Qaeda: The Transformation of Terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa, Dr. Baken has presented research findings to the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa, the 10th Biennial International Conference at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and the Society for Terrorism Research.

Dr. Baken has a PhD in Biodefense from George Mason University, a M.S. in Administrative Science from Central Michigan University and a B.S. in Biology from St. John University.
